Dear Nina: Ever Seen a Childless Mother? An experimental short film offering a glimpse into the life of Cora, a woman whose hidden truths and troubled past are revealed through a series of letters.
Sunday Kinfolk x Theatre Roscius is proud to present their second short film, Dear Nina: Ever Seen a Childless Mother? (2015, 19 minutes) as they take an intimate approach to film-making employing the techniques of devised and experimental theatre, woven with poetry to highlight the visual impact of mental illness in black communities, namely where women are present. The film also explores the patterns of systematic abuse linked to lineages of generational pain, passed down as heirlooms while disguised as one of the greatest traits of black women, their strength.
Performing Artist, Constance Strickland; Poet, C.L. McFadyen (onceuponapoet) and Visual Storyteller, Renata Cherlise strives to use art as a vessel to create dialogue centered around the triggers, stereotypes and myths of mental illness while offering an honest depiction of abuse through personal accounts. The trio introduces Dear Nina as a collective coping mechanism towards healing.
Dear Nina: Ever Seen a Childless Mother? is slated to screen in Chicago and Los Angeles. Screenings will include Q&A sessions with space for open dialogue to discuss creating art as therapy, mental health awareness, self care and abuse.
