HerSheMe is the first original play produced by Theatre Roscius, and is the first in a three part series that will celebrate the many facets of womanhood.
Called “breathtakingly beautiful, from the poetry on which it was based, to the heart wrenching performance of each actor on stage” (The Examiner), HerSheMe is an amalgam of physical theatre and performance art, smashing together variations of human sound and text, with a nod to theatrical roots in Greek tragedies, all coming together to create a powerful and unique evening of new theatre. “I was instantly drawn into the whirlpool ahead of me, as all three women hypnotically circled the stage. Steady and silent tears streamed down my face, I was transported to a different place entirely; specifically, any black box theater in San Francisco, where art and activism go hand-in-hand.” (Sapna Gandhi of We Make Movies.org.)
HerSheMe explores the fragility, femininity and masculinity of womanhood. What is womanhood? What does it mean for a woman to exist in a world not always bearable? How does she cope with the many sides of self? Yet she does…always staying in continuum.
Inspired by Rumi’s “Like This” and Langston Hughes’s “Troubled Woman”, with an Illustration by Anne Grifalconi depicting a woman bowed over with her shadow cast behind her, HerSheMe delves into the delicacy, strength, innocence and violence of the female psyche. HerSheMe played at Santa Monica Playhouse, Thursday, November 14, at 8pm, to a sold-out house before going to NOLA.
